annotation and elaboration
Annotation and elaboration (low-level collaboration)
Missing in the current digital landscape are well-developed strategies for annotating already authored information. Highlighting, pop-ups, stickies, and comment sections of websites comprise the majority of formats for adding information to content previously generated by another person or organization. Many of these strategies use simplistic physical metaphors and typing (notebook pages, post-its) that limit the contributions of form and space location to the meaning of content. And in many cases, annotations are compiled chronologically, not by topic, author, or relevance to a particular search or use of information. The purpose of this investigation is to explore strategies for annotation and elaboration of screen-based content that has been authored by someone else.
